Abstract
This chapter addresses the US’ rise to nuclear weapons hegemony since the end of the Cold War and presents suggestions on how China should respond. The paper outlines challenges of global nuclear security, critically assesses US nuclear policy and states that this policy drives certain states to pursue nuclear weapons. Subsequently, the paper discusses the broadening utilization of nuclear weapons and comments on their modernization and proliferation. Finally, the paper considers China’s options to confront nuclear challenges. The paper states that China should avoid sacrificing its interests to satisfy US nonproliferation requests.
