Abstract
China is steadily increasing its nuclear warhead stockpile and modernizing its nuclear forces. However, due to China’s policy of opaqueness regarding its nuclear forces, a multitude of varied estimates exist which intend to summarize China’s nuclear strength. Two of those estimates of China’s fissile material production and nuclear warhead delivery systems are analyzed and investigated, with the addition of a comparison with Chinese nuclear doctrine. The conclusion reached states that Hans Kristensen’s estimate that China possesses ∼260 nuclear warheads is the most accurate and has characteristics which parallel China’s nuclear doctrine.
