Abstract
In contrast to conventional weapons, the utility of nuclear weapons lies in its non-use, characterized by its powerful deterrent effects. If this nuclear deterrence among the nuclear powers works, nuclear war can be avoided & peace can be realized. We may call peace realized through this type of mutual deterrence “nuclear peace.” This paper discusses the political utility of nuclear weapons by using the current nuclear standoff between North Korea & the US as an example. The author argues that the nuclear posture of North Korea has been successfully deterring the US from using military force against the regime. Further, the nuclear brinkmanship of North Korea limits the policy options of the US & its allies. In this regard, Washington should move to act on this crisis, viewing the situation in terms of American national interests & regional stability rather than continuing to offer more military options. 35 References.
