Summary
The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is leading a multi-year research project to examine standards and innovation in China. NBR conducts independent research to inform the policymaking process in China and the United States and convenes conferences and workshops to bring together key policymakers and stakeholders. Research: NBR engages scholars from the United States, China, and other countries to produce research and publications with expert insight into China’s innovation and standards policies. NBR has published three reports (in Chinese and English) and two journal articles addressing a wide range of standards issues in China. NBR’s publications are widely read in academic and policy circles in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Network: NBR brings together and works closely with an extensive network of stakeholders and policymakers concerned with standards and innovation. Since 2006, NBR has convened three international conferences in Beijing and two workshops in Washington, D.C. to inform NBR’s research and facilitate dialogue among scholars, business leaders, and policymakers from the United States, Europe, and Asia. Impact: NBR conducts briefings on its research findings for high- level officials in the U.S. and Chinese governments. NBR has briefed Congressional committees, executive branch departments and agencies, and industry executives. In addition, NBR has briefed Chinese government officials and business leaders. Future: NBR’s fourth phase of research is focusing on the global knowledge economy and core issues for China and the U.S. Future phases will seek to expand the scope of the research project to examine standards-setting and innovation policies in China and other Asia-Pacific countries, and the implications of these policies for the global governance of new technologies.
