Abstract
What are the components of the defense diplomacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran? By adopting an analytical framework, this article attempts to provide a definition of Iran’s defense diplomacy. The author categorizes Iran’s defense diplomacy within two contexts of objectives and resources. The objectives of Iran’s defense diplomacy include, engineering the security environment, obtaining economic interests, getting access to required defense equipments and technologies, stabilization, arms control and confidence-building. The resources include, general policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran, their developments plans, the Supreme National Security Council and viewpoints of the defense minister. The author concludes that taking advantage of the potentials of the defense diplomacy enables us to materialize the objectives envisaged in major development documents and plans of the Islamic Republic, i.e., documents of national security strategy, defense diplomacy, development plans and strategic programs. Defense diplomacy potentials also enhance the influence of Iran and reduce the threats against the Islamic establishment.
