Abstract
The rapid growth of the Indian economy has prompted the Indian government to address the issue of energy security. In October 2008 India and the United States signed the 123 Agreement for co-operation in the field of civilian nuclear energy, after three years of negotiations. The US-India nuclear deal has given rise to controversy in both India and the United States, although for different reasons. But the agreement promotes strategic cooperation between the two countries and also strengthens the nuclear non-proliferation regime, which is an on-going concern in the United States.
