The idea of China dotting the Indian Ocean littoral with points of influence was also picked up by the media, which adopted the phrase “string of pearls,” coined by a U.S. naval analyst in 2005, to describe this supposed strategy. […] bilateral relations were severely strained in 2008-10 due to border confrontations, differences over Kashmir and Tibet, and China’s rhetoric over its claims in northeastern India. But New Delhi has also come to assume a less active role in the United States’ policy toward the Asia-Pacific for the near future.
