Abstract
This piece examines the US pivot to Asia in a historical context. The author argues that the US has long had a close engagement with Asia, although placing the region at the forefront of US foreign policy is new. The renewed engagement focusing on economic, diplomatic, cultural and security aspects could be beneficial to the US and the region. However, Washington will need to devote sufficient resources, sustain diplomatic efforts, act both bilaterally and multilaterally, and not signal any intent to counter or contain China.
