Abstract
Since pre-modern Chinese times, China has grounded itself in a traditional manner of behaving, thinking, and living in a society in accord with heaven-sanctioned principles. This identity has defined the Chinese for many, many years, and it has also defined Chinese society. As a result of this deeply ingrained way of life, the Chinese identity has remained largely unchallenged for many years. Now, with the effects of modernization, the question is: is this pre-modern way of life still relevant in the modern world? President Xi JinPing’s “Chinese dream” seeks to answer this question, but despite his goals, the clash between pre-modern and modern aspects in Chinese society will lead to instability and perhaps even violence in the upcoming future.
