Introduction
The South Korea-US alliance is a product of the Cold War. The imperatives of the Cold War defined and shaped political and security relations between the United States and South Korea. As this threat diminishes and a new regional order emerges, South Korea-US relations are arriving at a critical juncture: should relations just be maintained or should they be strengthened? During the Cold War South Korea-US relations were rather simple. But with the coming of the post-Cold War era, relations have been adjusting to the changing geopolitical and geoeconomic environment of Northeast Asia.
