Abstract
This paper mainly discusses Japan and China’s competitive economic relations with Myanmar in the background of dynamic regional political and economic changes in Asia. After analyzing these two countries’ political and economic policies towards Myanmar, this paper concludes by saying that the resurgence of Japanese interest and economic influence in Myanmar, together with the roles played by the US, India, and EU, may mitigate China’s prominence in the country. However, these two giants’ competition there might not necessarily be a zero-sum game. China has realized that it needs, like Japan, to adjust its ODA and investment schemes and redefine its role in Myanmar and Southeast Asia so as to better embrace the new regional political and economic environment.
