Brimley, Shawn, and Ely Ratner

Abstract
Skeptics argue that President Obama’s “Pivot to Asia” – or “re-balancing” as the administration has called it – is either toothless rhetoric or a heavy-handed policy that only antagonizes China. In his article, “The Problem with the Pivot”, Robert Ross labels the “pivot” as counterproductive and destabilizing, and he urges the U.S. to take into account China’s insecurities. Brimley and Ratner, on the other hand, refute Ross’ claims in his article and argue in favor of the Pivot to Asia. In this article, Brimley and Ratner examine Ross’ argument and explain how and why the Pivot to Asia works.
